  • Windows Explorer does allow you to search for a certain file type and browse all the files of a particular extension, but it does not display statistical data about the contents of a folder. You can obtain such information thanks to DirExtQt, a lightweight open-source application that can show you an overview of the number of files in a folder and their type.

    Upon launch, DirExtQt prompts you to browse for the directory you want it to analyze. Once selected, the statistics are ready in seconds and the main window is shown. The one-window interface reveals the total number of inspected files in the chosen folder, while also displaying an organized table containing the types of files in the target location, their number and their total size, in bytes. Double-clicking on a file extension opens up a new window that shows you a list of all the directories where this extension shows up.

    While it is possible to click on the table headers and thus sort all the entries with ease, there is nothing more you can do with this application. It merely counts the number of files of each type in a folder and adds their sizes to help you understand the structure of the directory. You can, however, call it via the command line by passing a directory as its parameter, meaning you can integrate it in your own projects.
