  • There are many virtual synths out there; some of them are best suited for specific genres of music and sound best only in some instances. But then there are those pieces of software that have so many functions and capabilities that one can only do them justice by calling them “supersynths”, “powerhouses”, or – my personal favorite – “beasts”.

    Today we’re going to take a look at VPS Avenger, an audio plugin that is a more than worthy representation of the supersynth concept.

    To put it briefly, Vengeance Production Suite Avenger is a complex and capable synthesizer that comes with parameters and presets galore. Some may even argue that it’s a bit overkill; if Avenger was part of Marvel’s Avengers, he would have probably killed Thanos by himself before the end of the first movie. Maybe I’m exaggerating, but I knew I had to make a Marvel reference ever since I read the program’s name.

    Though it looks good, the plugin’s interface may seem a bit basic when you first open it. There’s an oscillator in the middle, and most parameters are on the right. But then you realize that you can add more oscillators which are displayed in new tabs within their sections. The same can be done with every other parameter. This is an ingenious way to avoid overloading an interface that is already brimming with features. More interesting is that every oscillator and drum sequencer can be easily routed to any amp, filter, waveshaper, LFO, or FX unit.

    The drum sampler and sequencer are probably the features that set the Avenger apart from other synths. You can generate different instruments with the different oscillators and, by adding a drum track, you already have something resembling a song and you can play it just by pressing one key.

    Apart from the endless customization option, the plugin comes with over 900 presets and hundreds of other samples, multisamples, drumkits, drumsequences, and wavetables that you can use. While it may be a bit too much for beginners, VPS Avengers should definitely be acquired by producers who want a complete package.
