  • In today’s information overloaded society, it’s important to keep your favorite news sources close. This is why many of us opt for using feed readers. These are applications that use the RSS links of websites in order to bring you their latest articles. So instead of constantly browsing for news, the news are being “fed” to you.

    Obviously, there are many programs that do this, including many successful web applications. However, today we’re going to take a look at a desktop app called NorthReader.

    Even though it’s nothing fancy, NorthReader’s interface is welcoming. As soon as you launch the app, you’re able to add your RSS links and name your feeds properly. After you add them, the feeds are displayed in a list where you can easily toggle between them. The headlines will then be displayed in another list, where you can switch between a detailed and a simple view of the titles.

    Everything I’ve described in the above paragraph happens on the left side of the interface, while the right side is dedicated to displaying the articles in detail (if you have selected an RSS link that actually provides detailed information for each article). Unfortunately, this is where the program starts showing its limitations.

    If an RSS feed provides more detailed articles, there is no way of reading them whole from the application’s interface. If there’s a “read more” option, it will automatically open the link to the article your default browser; click the Open Website button will do the same. NorthReader also provides a Compact Mode view that is supposed to help you read articles without any distractions, but since you have to leave the app to read them in their entirety, the feature is kind of pointless.

    With a pleasant looking user-friendly interface and the option of importing and exporting feeds as XML files, there’s no doubt that NorthReader has potential to become a cool app. But a few more features need to be implemented before the users get a good news reading experience.
